The Dabney House this March

We are nearly finished with adoption paperwork.  We have like 2-3 more paper hurdles until we're ready to travel.  Right now we're waiting to receive I800 approval.  I'm supposed to call on our anniversary to see if it's processed and move on to the next step.

Since we have a few days with no paperwork, I thought I'd share some house updates.

Daniel and a friend worked hours on clearing debris off the slab.  The preexisting slab is what's left over from a house fire.  So the debris was basically the burned down house, which is sad, but thankfully the slab is in wonderful condition despite the fire.

Under the chimney, the fire, and the debris there was a slab.

A beautiful, clean slab.

Once it was cleared off, there were some scorched trees that had to be cut down.  I hate to see trees go down, but I'm really ready to see our house go up.  So, down with the trees.

Now that the slab is cleared off and we're supposed to have a few days without rain (thank you Jesus), the house building should pick up speed a bit.  We are needing to purchase our bathroom fixtures soon so that they can go in before all the walls are put up.

At the recommendation of a friend, Eva and I checked out a local surplus store and they had some really, really, really good deals.  We found cheap shower & tub combos.  Aaaannnndd, we found some affordable ceramic tile that's pretty.   The floors will all be wood except for the bathrooms which will be tile.

Option A
 Option B

So, I like Option A because it has good shape & color, it's very simple, and I don't think I'd get tired of it.  However, I am infatuated with Option B.  When I saw it, it made my heart race a little bit.  A decision will have to be made.  For the record, Option B is one cent cheaper per SF.

Lemme tell you a quick story about a bathtub.

Eva and I have coffee dates on Fridays with ladies from our small group.  Today I asked my friend Krissie (who is the queen of Craigslist and thrifting) to keep an eye out for a clawfoot tub on Craigslist.  Keep in mind, we have a Craigslist tub budget, not a Kohler tub budget.  Anyway, Krissie says "okay, but did you know that there's one at The Hog Pen?"

I thought, how cool, Fayetteville has a new thrift store called the Hog Pen.  That's a good name for a place in Razorback Country.  I asked her where The Hog Pen is, because I hadn't ever been to that one.   And she said, "it's by the chicken coop."

That's when I realized that The Hog Pen was actually just the hog pen where there used to be hogs on the farm.  Where we're building.  Indeed, right next door to the chicken coop.

So Eva and I drove out to the land this afternoon to have a look at that trough tub.

Definitely a keeper.  No telling how many years out in the elements and it's still watertight.  A bathtub for the ages.
